As I mentioned in my last post in The Home Depot series in which I introduced you to all the benefits of the The Home Depot Garden Club, I was most excited about starting the Flower Tower project. I couldn't resist the simple and colorful take on vertical gardening and my gardening needs right now are both color and height... both of which will draw emphasis away from the pitiful state of my lawn. Plus, I love a good project that doesn't take too long to complete (i.e., less than a day), isn't too complicated (I watch a video once only and only skim written instructions), but still packs a punch with high impact that I can sit back and admire when done. When someone asks about the amazing Flower Tower that has prime real estate in my yard, I can casually say, "Oh that, why yes, I did it in an afternoon!"

To begin, Chloe and I jotted off this morning to The Home Depot with our list in hand... and gathered what we needed. (Check our next post for lots more about the supplies.)
We were surprised how simple this project was. Although it took us an afternoon, and we had a big "OOOPs" moment in the video, we had fun. Seriously, lots of fun. Chloe and I hadn't gardened together since... well, since she was in my gardening class at Seaside Neighborhood School! It's been years! And although she was filming and could have stayed behind the camera, she walked over and jumped in to help. Which goes to show that the Flower Tower project is perfect for all ages and they'll be ready to #digin. There are no special skills required, but there are some sharp instruments, so assistance is definitely needed for young kids.
Although our finished Flower Tower is not as lush and full as the one you saw here, it will be. Petunias will spread out and cover the tower and will look fabulous in a few weeks. I admit a got a bit impatient trying to beat the rain and finish placing the flowers, so placing the flowers in the holes was the most trying part of the Flower Tower project for me, and I could probably have made them look a bit better. But, the Flower Tower still turned out beautifully. Plus, pansies will bloom for a months on end, as long as I pick the spent flowers. A few hours of creation + quality family time + months of enjoyment = win, win, win.
